The US Air Force has named the Boeing/Saab T-X advanced trainer as the T-7A Red Hawk, Air Force Acting Secretary Matt Donovan announced at the Air Force Associations’s 2019 Air, Space and Cyber Conference, on September 16. The name honors the ‘Tuskegee Airmen’ of World War II — who were known as the ‘Red Tails’ and the P-40 Warhawk that the group flew initially when deployed to Europe.

The naming came a week after Boeing and the USAF completed a Critical Design Review (CDR) of the airframe, according to Boeing program manager Steve Parker, who added that the training system part of the program recently passed a preliminary design review and should pass its CDR by the end of the calendar year.

The first two aircraft have now completed over 100 flights and the first engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) production representative are now entering production.
