Eagles in the deep freeze!

Photo: Rich Cooper

Extreme winter weather can bring the unprepared to a grinding halt. Not so the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. These remarkable images were sent in by Rich Cooper from the Centre of Aviation Photography, who is currently knee-deep in snow at Chitose Air Base, Hokkaidō, in temperatures that have hit a mind-numbing -26 degrees Celsius!

The extreme weather is commonplace here at this time of year, and the resident F-15J Eagles don’t bat an eyelid, with operations being uneffected, as can be seen from the accompanying images.

Rich says: ‘My breath was freezing on the back of the camera, which was literally caked in ice. But I had no technical issues!’
