The Lockheed Martin F-35A has been selected by Belgium for its fighter competition. It will take 34 jets to replace its existing F-16AM/BM fleet. The F-35 beat off competition from the Eurofighter Typhoon, which was being offered by BAE Systems. Belgian defence minister Steven Vandeput formally announced the decision on October 25.
The new makes Belgium the 13th international partner for the Lightning II. A US DSCA announcement valued the deal at $6.53bn.
